PROJECT DESCRIPTION

This unique wood-clad addition brings new life and much-needed square-footage to this Toronto semi-detached for a couple who loves to entertain both indoors and out. The home had a complete overhaul including the relocation of the kitchen and dining areas to join together the living and cooking spaces with expansive views to the garden. The sleek new extension employs shou-sugi-ban wood panels which are moisture resistant and offer a beautiful charred black patina that ages naturally over time. Oak wood, charred wood cabinets and concrete countertops come together in the interiors which draw upon Japanese joinery for the kitchen cabinets and sculptural island. The paired back material palette and open layout create a cohesive interior/exterior living space.

This residential addition demonstrates the possibilities of small-scale Toronto architecture and interior design, with a focus on attention to detail and the utilization of small lots. It showcases how thoughtful design can maximize space and create a stunning and functional home.
